He was married to Elsie Peddie in April 1898 in Newark, NJ and she is listed as his wife in the WWI draft registration but they are at different addresses in NJ. He was an organist and pianist. She was the daughter of Thomas B Peddie, millionaire, owner of a trucking company, congressman, former mayor of Newark, he built the Peddie school and the Peddie Memorial Church in NJ. Very wealthy. She broke off an engagement to a wealthy Newark man and married the church organist. She was 31, Tonzo was 24, although the papers listed him as 21. It was noted on the 1920 and 1930 census records and on her obituary in July 1936 that she was a widow, but I think she did not want the shame of a divorce on paper. In 1910 (census) four of their five children are with Tonzo in Manhattan and Elsie is with one of their daughters in NJ with 5 servants. Elsie is buried in the Peddie family plot with a huge monument shown on FAG, giving her name, Elsie Peddie, wife of Tonzo Suavage with her birth and death years. Nothing for him on that monument.
Tonzo was living at 118 W 57 St. on the 1920 census and 1924 passport application for his son Noel (1907-1936) who was tragically killed in a hit and run accident in NY, which was atributed to his mother's illness and death in the same year.
Tonzo married a second time on 19 Mar 1931 to Marta Lesser (1899-3 Sep 1981 Queens). They lived in Forest Hills at 111-35 75th Ave. as of the 1940 census and he is working as a Bank clerk. They have one son, James Frederick Sauvage 1934-2016. He died in Sacramento, CA.∼s/o James W. Sauvage (1849-1922) & Mary Eleanor "Nellie" (nee Lewis) Sauvage (1851- 1927).
arrived in America around 1890.
