A letter from Olivia Roberts Mather to her sister Laura Roberts Pillans stated that their paternal grandfather Roberts was a schoolteacher in North Carolina and married one of his pupils, "Miss Herndon." (Original letter in the Mary Pillans Van Antwerp Collection, Fairhope, AL.)
Notable Men of Alabama (1904) by Hon. Joel C. DuBose p.125 describes Mr. Roberts as "a North Carolina pioneer, who married a Miss Herndon."
They moved to Georgia with her brother Reuben Herndon (1764-1825), a pioneer of Putnam County with her son Dr. Willis Roberts.
