US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and served as the court law officer of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, 1855 to 1857. From 1858 to 1861, he was a member of the State House of Representatives and the State Senate. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1860 and was solicitor of the US Court of Claims, 1864 to 1866. In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress and served until he resigned in 1876. That same year, he was appointed US Court judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania and served until his death.
