Jose Ramon Almorza, who won numerous singles and doubles championships at Tampa Jai-AIai during a 31 year professional career, died Sunday. Known as "Big Al," he dominated play on the backcourt at the Tampa and Ocala frontons, won numerous championships at Tampa jai alai fronton and throughout the world and was a fan favorite before his retirement in 1987. A native of San Sebastian, Spain, Almorza and his family remained in Tampa following his playing days. He is survived by his wife, Margarita, and sons, her parents, Dr. Jose A and Nena Mijares; and his brother, Antonio, Spain.
