Durwood was born in Henderson Co, TX to Alfred Franklin and Effie Lou Esta Huggins Cleveland. His father is buried in Athens Cemetery and his mother is buried in Davis Cemetery in Athens, TX. Durwood attended Athens High School. Durwood entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and trained at Great Lakes, IL. He served in the Panama Canal Zone and the Pacific area. He married Joyce Lipscomb.

Services for Durwood Cleveland, 63, of Route 2, Elkhart, will be at 4:30 p.m. today in Garden of Memories Cemetery with the Rev. A.J. Henderson officiating. Arrangements are by Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.

A flag service by member of Palestine's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 63 will be conducted. VFW and DAV members will also serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Cleveland died Wednesday in a traffic accident.

Mr. Cleveland was born July 8, 1923, in Athens, son of Alfred and Effie Huggins Cleveland. He was a truck driver and a member of the Palestine VFW post and DAV chapter.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Lipscomb Cleveland of Elkhart; daughter, Patricia Gonzalez of Palestine; sons, Charles Danny Cleveland of Palestine, Chris Cleveland of Grapeland and Andy Cleveland of Andy Cleveland of Elkhart; sisters, Miriam Perry of San Francisco and Louise Skinner of Gault, Calif.; a half-brother, Carl "Buster" Cleveland of Tyler; step-mother, Bessie Cleveland of Athens; a stepsister, Patsy Franklin of Elkhart; and 14 grandchildren.
