Stephen Atkinson of Fairmont, WV and Seabrook Island, SC passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020. He would likely not tell you his age as he refused to celebrate his birthday himself for the last few years. He lived life exactly the way he wanted. He was happiest in handmade Lucchese cowboy boots and driving a fast car. His greatest and proudest achievement was making sure his family enjoyed time together. They will honor him by continuing to make each other a priority.

He joins his beloved and amazing son Tristan and is survived by his kind and patient wife Deanna Atkinson, his joyful grandson Gaines Atkinson, daughter-in-law Fiona Atkinson and their crazy dog Tilly whom he inexplicably loved. Steve was known as Stevie J. when his wife was happy with him and Stephen when she was not. His grandson called him Poppie, Pop Pop and Poppie Steve, also depending on his mood. He was the oldest sibling to 3 sisters, a fact from which he never recovered though he loved them dearly: Dianne Pratt, Jennifer Fountain (Bruce) and Cindy Witherspoon (Bart).

In his youth, he was a celebrated baseball player at Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, WV. He hoped that one day his grandson would share his athletic ability and competitive nature and have success on a ball field. His daughter-in-law feels there may be too much to overcome genetically but promises to sign him up anyway.

Steve touched many lives with his dedication to his work. From his beginnings as a driver on a potato chip route, he built several successful businesses and a real estate portfolio that included historic buildings and even a property he occasionally forgot he owned. His staff were like family; he loved them, had high hopes and expectations of what they could accomplish and helped them as much as he could along the way. He was known to help with bills, rent and even bail a time or two. He was very proud of their hard work and accomplishments, including those of Alyssa Caputo, the manager of his restaurant The Poky Dot whom he thought of like a daughter. Every step of the way he was kept in line and organized by his office manager Barbara Moore.

The family will celebrate Steve privately and with the necessary flair owed to the man in a ponytail who showed them his love tirelessly.
