22 Feb 2021 -- Oween Walker Cameron was born in Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona on 2 Dec 1935. She was the daughter of Robert E. Cameron and Gladys Lucille Walker.

Oween's mother Gladys was a teacher and director of physical education, so it is only natural that Oween would take up the profession of teaching. Miss Cameron attended the University of Arizona between 1954-1957. She enrolled in the College of Education, where she took classes in teaching--primarily a curriculum pertaining to teaching in high schools. She was on the 'Kitty Kat' journalism staff, participated in the University players drama group, and was a member of (KKT) Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

After graduation from UA, Oween tried acting in Hollywood, landing 3 small television roles and one bit-part in a movie. Her first role was in a TV episode of 'Highway Patrol' in 1958. In 1959 she appeared in an episode of the TV series, 'The Rough Riders.' In 1960 she had a small part in the TV series, 'Lock Up.' Her last acting role (that I know of) was in a 1960 movie called 'Spring Affair.'

I believe Oween may have tried her hand at modeling, but of this I am not sure. I do know she was a participant in a Los Angeles beauty pageant hosted by the local 15th Annual Los Angeles Home Show. She appeared in photos and articles in the Los Angeles, California newspapers; which reported on this show.

Her activities from 1960 to 1968 is unknown as of 2021.

It was in October 1968 that she attained a teaching position in Reseda, California at Sequoia Junior High School, where she taught English and Drama.

The Van Nuys News of Thursday, June 14, 1974 has an article about Oween. In this article it states that in March 1974, she took a 6 month sabbatical leave of absence from her teaching position at Sequoia Junior High to research drama, dancing and folk art in Africa, the middle east and southeast Asia. Some of the places she traveled to included Nigeria, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, India, Thailand, Singapore and Taiwan. I am not sure when she returned to the U.S., but I believe she came back from her travels in late 1974. Oween is found next, teaching drama at Francisco Sepulveda Junior High School, in North Hills, California in May 1975.

It is not known (at this time) what Miss Cameron did between 1975 and 1996. I assume she continued her teaching and may have retired from the Los Angeles county school system.

Oween died on 15 Sep 1996 in Los Angeles County, California and was. She was cremated by the Neptune Society, San Pedro, California.

I am not sure if Oween is buried here in this cemetery. I will try and find the correct location and move her to the right cemetery (if this isn't correct).

11 Feb 2021 - She may not be buried in any cemetery. Oween's 2-line obituary in the California newspapers gives only her name and the line, Neptune Society, San Pedro, California. After looking up the name of the Neptune Society, I found this to be a cremation service. So, apparently she was cremated. I am not sure of the disposition of her ashes.

Does anyone know where her ashes were taken? Were they given to family? I will leave her name in this cemetery until someone can let me know where ashes are located. (RGRader)
