Josefa Kristine Johannessen was born in the small fishing village of Gimsøy, Norway to Carl Johan Rist Johannessen and Andrea Karoline Karelsen on April 26th, 1895.

In 1914, Josephine immigrated to Middle River, Minnesota to live with her maternal uncle. Shortly after her move to the United States, she married Emil Albertson in Middle River, Minnesota. The two had a son and daughter who died as infants of illness. They then had two more children, Eleanor and Arthur. Not long after their birth, they moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota where Josephine owned multiple rooming homes that she rented out. In 1944, Josephine and Emil's son was killed in action in World War II, leaving Eleanor as their only surviving child. Josephine was also a prominent member of the Sons of Norway club in Saint Paul.

History was made, when Josephine applied for an absolute divorce against her husband Emil in 1954. This case went to the Supreme Court of Minnesota. Josephine won the case, only losing one of her homes. Read about it here: https://law.justia.com/cases/minnesota/supreme-court/1954/36-343.html
