Attended local Neshoba County, Mississippi public schools until high school where she graduated from Oak Park High School in Laurel, Mississippi. In 1958, she graduated with a degree in early childhood education from Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Mississippi (now part of the City of Jackson). She taught in Mississippi and California until her retirement.
