Charles A. Akins, 79, of Derry, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006. He was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Derry, the son of the late Andrew P. and Mary Eleanor Schrum Akins. He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Derry. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran. He formerly was employed by Kennametal, Chestnut Ridge, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, Derry, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, St. Vincent; and the Derry American Legion Post 324. He formerly volunteered for the Derry Area Ambulance Service. He is survived by his wife, Nira J. "Nancy" Thiel Akins; his son, Richard C. Akins, of Derry; two brothers, Gerald T. Akins and his wife, Joann, and Stanley R. Akins and his wife, Joan, all of Latrobe; four sisters, Marie Watson, of Latrobe, Bernadette Marshall, of Derry, Ann Beggs, of Pittsburgh, and Janet McGuire and her husband, Donald T., of Latrobe; a granddaughter, Annie; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles A. Akins on Jan. 15, 2000.
