Dear Mom,
Thank you for all you did for me and all the care you bestowed on me. We all have a story and you have three or four. You have helped many, many people in your life always in small ways with huge consequences. You have stepped in with just the right word on many occasions in my life and others. We didn't share many common interests except old photographs, a few antiques, old houses and country drives. Best were the country drives, I rememeber about 10. I wish we could have driven in Iowa. I have been to all the Iowa places with you but not on one of our drives. It's all the same now. We aren't supposed to rememeber the details of matters around here any way. It is the person we grow into while living here that moves on to the next world. Forgetting this detail and embellishing that will not matter in 100 years. You also made many friends. Every one who remembers you speaks very well about you. You were an outstanding cook and excellent at all the homemaking skills. This is to be expected from a farm gal. You described the great depression years as the happiest years of your life. Not all could say or even think that. You loved the closeness and sense of family.
I wanted to add my biograph of you. You are at present well and fit and with Clarence Hartman in Washington, Iowa. I'm not trying to rush matters either. Shorty, thank you for the wonderful life you gave my mom these past fifteen years.

Dec. 2010.
Shorty has passed on now and mom is 86! And she is a lively 86. I was back to visit recently and we went on two wonderful drives. I think we drove a little to far on the second day but so what. The days were full and beautiful, the Iowa blue sky and "just right for fall" weather were memorable. We drove to Fremont, where the Helms and Wallaces are buried. We took and posted pictures of two cemeterys and had a great time all around. Mom recalled the road from Able cemetery to Fremont as a girl of 5. She rode it many times in a horse and buggy.

April 2015 My son and I went back to see Esther and what a fine time it was. We spend a day chasing around the old haunts and visiting friends. We visited our old farmstead near Brighton. My son had not seen any of this so all new to him. Iowa treated us to fine days, great weather for exploring. The rent a car had all wheel drive and we did put it to use!

June 1 2019 . How the time goes! I just visited Esther in Iowa in 4 days of fine Iowa weather. It had been raining for weeks on end, all the rivers were out. and I dropped in to see Iowa at its best! We ran the rental car around again, smaller circle this time but just as much fun and interesting. We went out to dinner each night and gained a pound ..... or 2. It was grand! We visited cemeteries and left flowers as needed. Of course a trip to Brighton. So much fun. I know it was fun because the time went like 2 days in 4. Esther is 95! She uses her walker all the time ( good sense) and gets around very well. All the rivers were out and much low area was flooded. It will rain more this week coming. A nice visit for sure. I highlight stop this year was the county park near Kenny Kaufman's place. There is a nice drive to a parking area and then hiking trails take off. We didn't hike (of course) but we sure enjoyed the day, being careful to avoid the extra abundant poison ivy. The park is beautiful, it would be nice if they could access the 80 acres to the east. This has never been farmed or logged in my Iowa memory. It is as close to wild Iowa as one can get.

Jed Bleess (Esther's grandson) and I visited her at the UP home in Washington, Iowa. We ran over the Iowa country side like we were being measured. It was great fun and covered many miles. We visited family cemeteries, old haunts, previous homes, memorable places and generally had a great day. We couldn't do it all but we sure made the effort. Esther was smiling ear to ear all day. A year being cooped up due to covid is a year to much. She was out, about and we have photos and trinkets to prove it. One highlight was a picnic at the park at Lake Darling. What a day. Both days actually, bright, blue and green. Iowa was lush from continual rain. We had wonderful if chilly weather. We were well treated by the fates and fortunes. Esther uses a walker now but on these days one would have thought it had a motor. I will never forget her smiling, all day!
