DONALD S. HAMACHER
(1928 - 2010)

Donald S. Hamacher, age 81, a resident of Walnut Grove Senior Concepts, Manitowoc, has entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 8, 2010, after suffering from a lingering service related illness.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1928, in Green Bay, son of the late Theodore and Minnie (Bushmaker) Hamacher. Donald enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945, serving his country in during three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In 1959, while on board the U.S. Navy ship, the USS Kiowa as a 1st Class Boatsmate, he was responsible for the recovery of NASA's first unmanned space capsule carrying the squirrel monkey's ABLE and BAKER. On Oct. 17, 1953, he married Jean M. Scheurell at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. After retiring from his service in the U.S. Navy in 1965, he was employed by Wisconsin Fuel and Light, retiring in 1988. He was a member of AmVets Post 99 and the American Legion Drews-Bleser Post 88.

His survivors include: his wife, Jean of Manitowoc; a daughter: Barbara J. Hamacher, Manitowoc, and her children, Amanda J. (Abraham) Thompson, Tomah; Craig J. (Priscilla) Giese, Mishicot; SGT Patrick M. (Lacey) Kopecky, Fort Riley, Kan.; and step daughter: Kristy L. (Robert) Zahn, Manitowoc; a son: Brian J. Hamacher, Stoughton, and his son, Donald James Hamacher. Donalds great-grandchildren are: Alexander W. Kronfrost, Manitowoc; Daniel J. Giese, Wheeler, Wis.; Faith M. Thompson, and Emily E. Thompson, Tomah; Sean M. Kopecky and Keghan P. Kopecky, Fort Riley, Kan. His step-great grandchildren: Kyle J. Zahn, Zachary D. Zahn and Christopher J. Zahn, Manitowoc; three brothers-in-law: John (late Deloris) Scheurell, Manitowoc; Allen (Connie) Scheurell, Manitowoc; Robert Scheurell, Milwaukee; nephews: Dennis Scheurell, Manitowoc; Daniel (Debbie) Scheurell, Waunaha, Wis.; Thomas (Sandy) Scheurell, Manitowoc; Rick (Chris) Krause and their son Ryan, Sobeski, Wis.; John (Tina) Hamacher and their children, Jason, Jessica, Briana, Anaheim, Calif.; Matthew Stein, Gardnerville, Nev.; nieces: Debra (Scott) Uecker, Waukesha; Jennifer Uecker, Waukesha; Alissa (Brian) Griebel and their children, Evan and Jack, New Ulm, Minn.; Joy (Kevin) LeClair, and their children, Melissa and Nic, Port Washington; Sue (Ed) Braam and their children, Andrea and Ryan, Neenah; Teri (John) Markham and their daughter, Taylor, Manitowoc; Lynn Scheurell, Salt Lake City, Utah; Laura Scheurell, Minominee Falls; Kathy (Dan) Stein, Gardnerville, Nev.; Heather Stein and her children, Sophia and Blue, Gardnerville, Nev.; Mary Chris (Dan) Bradford and their children, Holly and Sean, Pacentia, Calif. Donald was preceded in death by his parents: Theodore and Mini Hamacher; an infant brother, Gerald Hamacher; his brother, Francis Hamacher; a sister, Katherine Hamacher Krause; an infant nephew, Matthew Krause; a nephew David Scheurell; and an infant great-granddaughter, Catilyn Giese.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2010, at Knollwood Memorial Chapel, town of Kossuth. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen. Cremation has occurred at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and Donald will be laid to rest at Knollwood Mausoleum. Military Rites will be accorded by AmVets Post No. 99.

The family will greet relatives and friends at Knollwood Memorial Chapel, town of Kossuth, from 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, until 12:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to AmVets Post #99 or the American Legion Drews-Bleser Post No.88.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home & All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
