Dewey was a famous Modoc stage horse for 20 years, beloved by all. Dewey was a faithful old horse, pulling the Modoc stage for many years. He had a friendly personality and was loved by all who knew him, especially the children. As they passed him every day, they slipped him cookies, fruit and any tidbit they had. He was just an old worn out horse and when he died, his owner started to drag him out into the desert and leave him. He was surprised to be met by a mob of crying children and irate adults. To escape their wrath, he agreed to haul Dewey out to the City Cemetery, bury him with a suitable funeral. That's the way it happened. Source: Tombstone's Other Cemetery by Mary D. and Ben T.
