James Lyle Bell was drafted, entering service on 16 May 1965. He arrived in Vietnam on 01 Dec 1966 and was assigned to Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry. He died by accidental gunshot at Tan Tru Base Camp, 11 km east-southeast of Tan An City, in Long An Province, South Vietnam.

A DA Form 2496 prepared at HQ US Army, Washington, on 27 Apr 1967 describes circumstances of death as follows: "Indiv was sitting in tent when another individual came into the tent from perimeter guard and his weapon accidentally discharged, hitting him." The DA 2496 is posted on the CoffeltDatabase.org web site.

PFC Bell's father, Wintford Bell, had died in December 1965 and was buried in Dobbs Cemetery, located on a gravel road behind the Canada Creek Baptist Church in the Coopersville community on Highway 92, Wayne County, KY.

PFC Bell's body was returned to his mother, Alma Martin Bell, then resident in Coopersville. She buried him in Dobbs Cemetery with his father.

Mrs. Bell remarried, and at her death in 2015 (age 105) Alma Martin Bell Lewis too was buried in Dobbs Cemetery.

The location of Dobbs Cemetery as given on FindAGrave is not entirely correct. It is not in Parmleysville, but instead is located in Coopersville community as described above. The GPS location per Google Maps is 36.7568740, -84.7353030.
