Born July 26, 1938, in Greeneville, TN, he was the son of the late James Hazel Thompson and Gladys (Burkhart) Thompson.
He attended the University of Tennessee, was retired from Atkins Machinery, was a member of Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Air National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Hunter Thompson; two sons, Matt Thompson and his wife Jill of Cowpens, and Hunter Thompson and his wife Amy of Rock Hill; a daughter, Meredith Fortner and her husband Jackie of Boiling Springs; six grandchildren, Joshua Thompson, Christian Thompson, Zachary Fortner, Kyndall Fortner, Peyton Thompson, and Palmer Thompson; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Hunter of Spartanburg; and a brother, Taylor N. Thompson of Kingston, NY.
Visitation was 2:00-2:45 PM Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
Funeral services followed at 3:00 PM at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Richard M. Thomas. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to the Birmingham Baptist Association, c/o Medical Apartments fund, 750 Montclair Road, Birmingham, AL 35213.
