James Monroe Carroll was born 6 January 1841 in Dallas County, Alabama. He was the son of John B. Carroll and Hannah Robertson. The Carroll family moved to DeSoto Parish, Louisiana when James was young. On 3 May 1862 James enlisted in the Confederate Army in Mansfield, Louisiana. He served as a private and then Corporal in Co. A, 11th. Regiment of Louisiana. On his military record he was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, blue eyes, light hair, and fair complexioned. After the war James came to Texas about 1869.

On 25 March 1874 James married Amanda Caroline Campbell in Gregg County, Texas. Amanda born 12 July 1850, was the daughter of John Enos Campbell and his wife, Elizabeth. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Job Taylor.

James lived in Cherokee County, Texas until about 1895 when he moved his family to Polk County, Texas where he and Amanda lived until their deaths. James Monroe Carroll died 2 January 1915 at his home in Leggett, Polk County, Texas after a short illness. Amanda Campbell Carroll died 10 January 1934.

James and Amanda Carroll were the parents of Warren Mitchell Carroll, Minnie Carroll, Amanda Elizabeth "Betty" Carroll Gassiot, James B. Carroll, William Asa Carroll, Charlie D. Carroll, and Cecil A. Carroll Knight.
