Local teen dies in crash

The Times Bulletin

WILLSHIRE - A 16-year-old Willshire teen died over the weekend after a one-car crash early Saturday morning in Mercer County.

According to the Mercer County Sheriff's Office, the department received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a 16-year-old had not arrived home as of 3:16 a.m. After a brief search, Tyler James Dellinger, 16, of Willshire, was found dead at 3:34 a.m. Saturday in Black Creek Township. Authorities say the crash occurred sometime after midnight.

According to reports, the crash scene was discovered by friends and family of the 16-year-old. The crash scene was located on Grauberger Rd., approximately 1/4 of a mile north of Wilson Rd.

Authorities say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.

Dellinger was reportedly driving a 2003 Dodge Stratus northbound on Grauberger Rd. when he lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the east side of the road. The vehicle struck a utility pole before flipping several times. The car eventually came to a rest in a cornfield.

Authorities say Dellinger was ejected from the vehicle, which subsequently caught on fire and burned. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The Rockford and Chattanooga fire departments, along with a Rockford squad, responded to the scene, as did Mercer County Coroner Dr. Tim Heinrichs.

Dellinger is the son of James and Vicki Dellinger of Willshire. He would have been a junior at Parkway High School in Rockford.

Dellinger was a member of the Parkway High School golf team, baseball team, ACME baseball team and Future Farmers of America.

Funeral service information can be found on page A2 of today's edition of the Times Bulletin, or online in the obituaries section.
