Canadian Senator. She made history when she was appointed by then Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett to the Canadian Senate in 1935. At the time she was the second woman to be named to that position, the first being Cairine Reay Mackay Wilson who was appointed by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie in 1930. Born in Castleton, Ontario, she attended the Toronto Normal School in Toronto, Ontario, and became a school teacher. A few years later she married a local farmer named Howard Taylor Fallis and settled in Peterborough, Ontario. She became interested in politics and became the first President of the Peterborough, Ontario, Conservative Women's Association in 1923. She later served as the Vice President of the Canadian Conservative Party Association and was a key member of the campaign team that helped elect Richard Bedford Bennett to the office of Prime Minister of Canada in 1930. She was appointed to the Canadian Senate five years later. A Member of the Progressive Conservative Party, she served two terms as a Senator in the Canadian House of Commons from 1935 to 1956. As a Member of the Canadian Senate, she was instrumental in having issues such as Banking and Commerce, Immigration and Labour, Internal Economy and Contingent Accounts, Public and Welfare, and Miscellaneous Private Bills heard in sessions of the Canadian House of Commons. She passed away in Peterborough, Ontario, on March 7, 1956, while still in office.
