Daniel C. Rowell was born in England, and came to the United States before his 18th birthday. He arrived in Oregon Sep. 28, 1850, and married Polina Buell, daughter of Elias and Sarah (Hammond) Buell on Feb. 6, 1851 in Polk Co., OR. He took donation land claim 2721 in Polk Co. The 1860 census of Buena Vista, Richland Co Wisconsin shows Daniel as a miller, and shows children Elias H., 8; Henry C, 7; and Charles M, 2. In 1865, they left Wisconsin to return to Oregon, with four children. They were on the steamer Brother Jonathan, which struck a rock off the coast of Crescent City, California, and the entire family drowned when the ship sank. The bodies of the children were never recovered.
