Virgil Hardin Potter, the youngest of the six children of Marion Potter and Georgia Ann Johnson, was born February 13, 1903 at the Potter farm near Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas. As he was growing up Virgil did his share of the farm work in the cotton fields with the rest of the family. He attended the Mesquite schools. After his graduation in 1923, Virgil went to work for Western Union Telegraph Company installing telegraph equipment over a six state area. He was working out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1926 when he met the sixteen-year-old Grace Alice Machen. Virgil and Grace carried on a two-year romance of long letters and short visits between Virgil's business trips. They were married on June 23, 1928 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They were the parents of Joyce VirJean and Barbara Donice, who were born in Oklahoma City. Virgil was transferred back to the home office in Dallas in 1932.
Virgil traveled the southwest area of the United States for Western Union for many years. His job kept him on the road over six states often for weeks at a time and brought him home to Dallas and his family between trips. He continued to move up in the company over the years, eventually becoming head of the Equipment Department. Virgil's age of 40 and his high priority deferment kept him out of military service during World War, II. In 1954, during a conference between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the President of Mexico, Virgil was in charge of all telegraphic communications between the two countries.
After 33 years of service with Western Union Virgil retired at the age of 65. At that time he and Grace became foster parents for the Dallas County Welfare Department. When they first requested the right to foster children, the Welfare Department felt they were too old. They were finally allowed to foster a set of 18 month old twins, who were with them for over four years. Eventually Welfare asked them to take on newborn emergency cases -sometimes as many as three or four at a time with stays as short as a few days or as long as a few months. Over the years they fostered over two hundred children, many who were handicapped, between Virgil's retirement in 1968 and their move to Denton, Texas in 1972. Virgil died in Denton on April 30, 1989. His obituary from the Denton Record-Chronicle follows.

For you, Dad, for Father's Day
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quite sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arms of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family's need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so he called him --- Dad.
