NEWPORT, R.I. — Hugh D. "Yusha" Auchincloss III, a member of one of Newport's most historically prominent families, died early Saturday morning at his home on Hammersmith Farm, summer home of President John F. Kennedy. He was 87.
"He adored Newport and everybody adored him," his son, Cecil, said on Tuesday. The cause of death was cancer, Cecil said.
Auchincloss was the son of Hugh D. Auchincloss Jr., a stockbroker who married Janet Lee Bouvier in 1942. Bouvier's daughter, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, future wife of Kennedy, thus became the younger Auchincloss' stepsister. They remained friends until her death in 1994.
A graduate of the Groton School and Yale University, and a Middle East diplomat and New York City management consultant before retiring, Auchincloss frequently shared his memories with The Providence Journal, including in a September 2013 reminiscence of the late president's final visits to Newport, 50 years before.
On one visit, the Kennedys marked their 10th anniversary at Hammersmith, scene of their wedding reception after their September 1953 ceremony at St. Mary's Church. Auchincloss toasted the president, who would be assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963.
"First, Mr. President, I want to congratulate you," Yusha said. "You've been a very good president. I'm glad you had your wedding here in Newport. I'm glad you're celebrating your wedding anniversary here with Jackie. But I have to remind you: if you hadn't gotten engaged to Jackie, my stepsister, neither one of you would have been in the White House. And I wouldn't have had a chance to stay in the White House. So I have to thank you for that!"
During a 1999 tour of Hammersmith Farm's main house, he brought a Journal reporter into what had been Jackie's room as a teenager.
"When she became part of the family," he said, "and my stepmother moved up here in the summer of 1943, everything got moved around. I moved up from the room downstairs. Since I was the eldest in the family, I had the first pick of the rooms ... Jackie was the second oldest so she got the second-best room, which is this room with its view of the Bay at sunset. She was always the room next to me."
In his later years, Auchincloss was active in a number of organizations and causes, including the Naval War College Foundation, Save The Bay and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County. A longtime member of the Spouting Rock Beach Association — more popularly known as Bailey's Beach — he frequently entertained visitors in his smaller house on the Hammersmith grounds.
"Yusha loved a good drink, and his favorite was Stoli Ohranj [Vodka] on the rocks," said his son. "What he loved even more was sharing it with his friends. He will be missed by all who were so fortunate to know him."
A service for Auchincloss will be held at 11 a.m. on July 11 at Trinity Episcopal Church."
