Thomas E Hudson November 26, 1920 - March 30, 2012
Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Tom moved with his parents, George and Elsa (Karakas) Hudson, to the Los Angeles area in the late 1920s. He graduated from Alahambra High School and entered the California Institute of Technology to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree. Tom volunteered for the Navy during World War II but received a medical discharge. He then went back to Caltech to complete a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Tom worked as a aeronautical engineer in the San Fernando Valley aerospace industry, for both Lockheed then The Marquardt Company, working on missiles, ramjets, and the attitude control thrusters for the Apollo Lunar Landing Module. He has been a lifelong member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He married Eva Keith, who gave birth to his first daughter Sharon. After their divorce he married Jean (aka Penni) Read yielding second daughter Susan. He retired in 1985 to spend time traveling and playing golf with his wife, staying active in the Optimists Club, AIAA, and the CalTech and Alhambra High School Alumni organizations. After Penni's death in 1996 he continued to travel with friends and play golf, and moved to the San Diego area to live with Susan's family. In his last decade Tom travelled the world, and immersed himself in genealogy research, coin and stamp collecting, and staying in contact with old friends and relatives. He was also on innumerable mailing lists, and dutifully filled out Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes in an attempt to submit the most entries without ever winning anything. He will be greatly missed by his loving daughters Sharon Porter and Susan Langsford, son-in-laws Jack Porter and Derek Langsford, grandchildren Trevyn and Kennan Langsford, Matt Porter, Kim (Porter) and Eric Hendrickson, and great-grandchildren Kylie, Madison and Ava Porter, and Piper and Sloane Hendrickson, and his far-flung family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to California Institute of Technology or Oregon State University.
