Albenia Martha Boole was born on Sept. 8, 1815, in Nova Scotia. Her father was a farmer and shipbuilder. The family also ran an inn.
When Albenia was sixteen, the family moved to New York. Mr. Boole engaged in shipbuilding with his sons, however, Albenia's father recognized her intelligence. He made sure that she received a good education. She became a teacher. Her strength was mathematics. She was able to draft and lay off plans for shipbuilding. Her skills were as good as any man.
In 1833, Albania was twenty-two and she married Donald McKay. He had come from Nova Scotia as well, and he was a shipbuilder.
Albenia helped Donald build his mathematical skills. Together they would work on strengthening his skills so that he would be able to enhance his shipbuilding knowledge.
They traveled to England and other countries in Europe so that they would be up to date on the newest shipbuilding technologies, They worked together to create an extreme clipper. The McKays had seven children. They settled in Newburyport. By 1845, Donald McKay established a shipyard on Border Street in East Boston. The couple had a home at 78-80 White Street. Albenia became sick in December, 1848 and died.
