NEWPORT NEWS - Richard Theodore(Ted) Aherron, 79, passed away suddenly on Dec. 3, 2008. A longtime resident of the Peninsula, he was a native of Danville, Va. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma Spencer Aherron; his sons, Martin and his wife, Shelley Minkoff, David and his wife, Dawn; and two grandchildren, Dana and Dillon. In addition he has three surviving sisters, Edith Mathews, Violet Drew both of Danville, and Rachel Johnson of Richmond. Also, his dear friend Mae Bliss of Danville.

He was an Air Force veteran and served in Europe during the Korean War. Job opportunities brought him to the Peninsula. He was a graduate of a machinist apprenticeship at Amoco's Yorktown Refinery. He retired from Wyle Laboratories where he worked in instrument repair and calibration.

Ted was a voracious reader. He loved to share his often self-deprecating and invariably humorous anecdotes and continued to share new ones as the years went by. He grew up the youngest of 10 siblings and enjoyed the company of his extensive family. Nothing brought him more pleasure than having a family reunion. Ted was loved by so many and will be missed.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in the chapel at Peninsula Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
