She graduated from Radcliffe in 1934, then worked as a correspondent for Life magazine. In 1939, she married Donald T Field, father of her three children. She edited Child Life magazine for a decade before marrying her second husband, William Leverett ("Lev") Cummings (b. 24 Jan 1900, Portland, ME - d. 22 Jan 1989, West Falmouth MA), and moving to West Falmouth. They spent their winters at the Hope Chest in Hopetown, Bahamas. She was a prolific writer of prose and poetry. She sold an article to Town & Country while still in college. She went on to write a political satire column, "Zoo's Who," for the National Observer. She published four fiction and nonfiction books, including Adventures on the Cloud Nine and Challenge of the Sea Floor, and eight books of poetry including Pastiche and Reprise. She was named Poet Laureate of Falmouth in 2012. She was also a tennis champ, winner of several Senior Olympic gold medals. Surviving are her children, Deborah Field Washburn, Martha Amanda Field, and Hartry Hamlin Field; stepdaughter, Sally Cummings Goodrich; six grandchildren, four surviving step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
