George A. Ferguson, Mr. Ferguson was born March 10, 1847, in New York State. Received an academic education, and a commercial one as well, besides learning the tinsmith trade. In July, 1865, with his brother, A. H., came to this State, and engaged in the hardware business, in Lima Center. At the end of five years went to Berlin and into business, and while there invested in cranberry marshes near Grand Rapids, working at his trade Winters, at Winona and other places. In 1876 he removed to Grand Rapids. On the 11th of February, 1878, he was united in marriage with an estimable lady, Miss Jennie M. Gunn. They have one daughter, Blanche. In April, 1879, he went into the hardware business with J. N. Brundage.
During the flood of June, 1880, on the 13th, while engaged in removing tools and goods from a part of the shop threatened to be submerged, some floating timbers struck the foundation, and that part went down, carrying him with it. His body was never recovered. He was thirty-three years of age at the time of his death, an Odd Fellow and a member of the Congregational Church. No man in town was more highly esteemed as an honorable and upright citizen, and his loss was deeply felt.
