Clifton Macy Foss (Clif) died unexpectedly at home, March 1, 2018. Born on August 21, 1927, a son of Clifton Macy Foss and Marion Fletcher Foss, Clif grew up in Portland and spent summers at Grand Beach. He graduated from Deering High School, Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA, and Williams College, Williamstown, MA, where he was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. Following graduation from Williams in 1951, Clif enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was stationed in Okinawa and Washington, D. C. during the Korean War.

In 1955, after serving four years in the military, Clif joined his two brothers, the late Robert Macy Foss and the late Richard Fletcher Foss, at Schlotterbeck & Foss Co., Portland, Maine, founded by their grandfather, Charles Sumner Foss and Augustus G. Schlotterbeck, in 1866. Clif was Vice President and Treasurer until he retired in 2003, when the company was sold.

Clif married Dorothea Blanchard (Dorrie) in 1957 and they moved to Cape Elizabeth where they raised two children. Their daughter, Angela Ruth Foss, lives in Cambridge, MA, and their son, Andrew Clifton Foss and his partner Denise Irene Rivoal live in Silver Spring, MD.

As a member of First Congregational Church UCC, South Portland, Clif was a past Deacon, member of the Eskimo Men's Club and Usher Captain. From an early age Clif enjoyed coin collecting, even traveling to Europe to further his hobby. Additional interests included building stone walls, gardening, collecting antique bottles and antique iron objects, reading, doing cross word puzzles and listening to classic jazz. He was also known to make puns and rhymes.

In addition to his two brothers, he was also predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Edmund W. Hoctor (Mary F.). Surviving, in addition to his wife and children, are two brothers-in-law Sheldon G. Blanchard and wife Beverly of Belmont, NC, and Dexter F. Blanchard and wife Linda of Willow, AK, and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, ME.
