Elizabeth was the daughter of William Howard and Lucy Gatewood.

On July 22, 1823, in Breckinridge Co, KY, she married John Bedford (Jr). To this union, 6 known children were born. Her husband died suddenly in January, 1838, leaving Elizabeth a widow with the 6 children. In April of 1839, in Meade Co, she married Benjamin B. Tompkins (as it was spelled on the marriage license). To this union, a son, Benjamin Guynn (Gwynn?) Tompkins was born (27 Apr 1840 - 22 Jun 1840). Elizabeth died in June (one source says the 26th) of 1840. She would have died as a Tompkins, however an old cemetery transcription book seems to indicate was was buried as a Bedford.

NOTE: The 1951 tombstone photo only shows the corner of hers. Apparently, her 1951 photo did not come out.

ADDITIONAL GRAVE SITE DETAILS: In the early 2000s (or 1990s) the grass was very overgrown and someone got on a riding lawn mower, couldn't see the tombstones under all that tall grass, and really did a lot of damage to the stones. Elizabeth's was broken in half and was eventually buried under dirt and grass. On a trip back east, Randy Brown, Graves Chairman of the Oregon-California Trails Assoc., found the tombstones and did a repair on Elizabeth's (Jun. 27, 2023). Her tombstone had fallen to the side and was buried under about an inch of sod. Randy dug it out, cleaned it up, then made a second trip to glue it and set it in the ground. THANK YOU RANDY FOR ALL YOUR TIME, EFFORT, AND TRAVEL!

The foot stone in the background says E.B.B. with her husband's saying J.B.
