Gräfin Maria Festetics de Tolna was the daughter of Tasziló 1st Fürst Festetics de Tolna, and his wife, the former Lady Mary Douglas-Hamilton, daughter of William Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton, 8th Duke of Brandon, and Princess Marie Elisabeth of Baden. She was married at Keszthely on July 23, 1902 to Karl Emil, Prince zu Furstenberg, by whom she had five children.
