At an early age, Melvin moved to New York City from North Carolina after the untimely death of his father, where he lived his youth until joining the service. His mother later married Charles Cianflone.

Melvin served his country in the service of the US Air Force for over 20 years, retiring in 1977, and then entered the private workforce, working another 30 years assisting America's veterans as an administrator and pharmacy technician at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. Even after "retiring", Melvin continued to work part time preparing taxes at H & R Block to fulfill his need to always contribute (and ensure the accounting classes he took in college weren't for naught!).

Sadly, Melvin passed away on February 15th, 2017 at the age of 79.

Melvin is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Fusako McBee; his sons Charles, Anthony and John McBee; his daughter Mae Ann McBee; his daughters-in-law Elaine McBee and Lynda Teague-McBee and four grandchildren, Andrew, Marie, Carl and Mikari McBee as well as three great grandchildren, Amberlin, Scarlett and Arizona McBee. Melvin has three brothers; Robert McBee and Frank Cianflone, both surviving Melvin, and Carl McBee, who preceded Melvin in death as a direct result of his service as a Marine in Southeast Asia in 1965.

Throughout his life, Melvin enjoyed outdoor activities such as golfing, hunting, fishing, camping and just working around the yard at home but mostly, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, even more so when the effects of age made some of the activities he enjoyed more difficult. Melvin's other passions were baseball, which he played in his youth and continued enjoying throughout his life, other college sports, card games and reading. His only indulgences were a good Scotch whiskey and a good novel and he never diminished the value of a quiet moment or a hard earned dollar. Melvin was a simple, unselfish man, asking only of himself and never of others. He was never late and always accountable and expected the same of those around him though he was quick to forgive others but never himself. He lived with a hard exterior and a soft heart and his sense of humor was never buried too deep beneath the surface. He will be missed immensely by all who knew him. Those who loved him are thankful for the time and life they shared together and memories of him will always be with them. In their hearts, he will forever live.
