Enlisted in Company e, 19th Michigan Infantry as First Sergeant on August 8, 1862 at Sturgis, for 3 years, age 22. Mustered September 5, 1862. Discharged for disability on July 16, 1863, on account of wounds received in action at Thompson's Station, Tennessee, on March 5, 1863.
1st wife: Esther Almeda Todd, b. Aug. 11, 1842, in Sturgis, St. Joseph Co. Michigan, ds. Jan 7, 1874 in Sturgis, St, Joseph Co. Michigan.

She died from complications 3 days after the birth of her son, Edmund Amidon. He was raised by his Aunt, Lucy Todd Poyneer and Uncle, Alfred Nelson Poyneer
