Gerstacker was born Esther Cathrin Little in Cleveland. Schuette said the family is not releasing his mother’s age. She met William H. Schuette at Cleveland’s West Technical High School and married him in 1940.
The couple moved to Midland in October 1941 when William Schuette started working at The Dow Chemical Co.
William Schuette died in 1959. She married Carl A. Gerstacker in 1975. The Gerstackers had a leading role in the founding of the Midland Area Community Foundation and in the building of the Tridge. Carl A. Gerstacker also created "Barley McTavish," an imaginary columnist who helps people through a weekly Daily News column. Carl Gerstacker died in 1995.
Esther’s community involvement during her 62 years in Midland included being secretary of the Midland Center for the Arts board, president of the United Way board for six years, and vice president and secretary of the Midland Symphony Orchestra board.
She also served on the boards of the Cancer Center, the Midland Music Society, the Visiting Nurse Association and the Salvation Army. She was vice president and a trustee of the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation. Foundation members could not be reached for this article.
Gerstacker was listed among 150 outstanding women in Michigan in 1987.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Midland from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
