Mary Jane or Jane Mary McDonald was born in Madison County, Ohio in 1827.

She married Samuel Adair when she was sixteen or seventeen (and he was about 23) in Kosciusko County, Indiana on 23 May 1844.

The family were pioneer farmers - in Indiana (marriage and 1850 census), Iowa (1860 census), and then Nebraska (1870 census). From the increasing value of real estate recorded in each census, they seem to have done quite well financially, but at too great a personal cost. At the same time as home building and farming Jane raised ten children born in three different states. She seems to have had enough in the 1870s and left Samuel.

In 1880 Samuel was still in Nebraska, but was buying more land in Colorado where he could buy 160 acres for a token $10. By 1885 he had started over again there and died in Colorado in 1889. Jane, on the other hand, moved to Los Angeles County, California where she passed herself off as a widow in the 1880 census and remained there to the end of her days. She died in Monrovia on 21 Jan 1899 with the majority of her children living nearby.
