Daniel (Dan) Phillips entered into eternal life on Friday, January 10, 2020. Dan was born on March 21, 1949 in Eustis, Florida. He attended elementary school in Palatka and graduated from Hastings High School in 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 and served nine years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant before his Honorable Discharge in 1977.
Dan was diagnosed with lung cancer early in the Spring of 2019. He received the most excellent care from the Malcolm Randall North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Administration in Gainesville and the Palatka Outpatient clinic since his diagnosis.
Dan’s work career had him working in paper mills throughout the U.S., including here in Palatka at the Hudson Pulp & Paper Company and the current Georgia Pacific Operations. During his secular career, Dan also served his local church as a Sunday School teacher, a Deacon, Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor. Dan had opportunity to supply the pulpit in churches in Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Alabama.
“It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to have known many wonderful leaders, educators, pastors and gentlemen in the Palatka/Putnam County area: C.L. Overturf, Jr. former Dean of St. Johns River Junior College and currently the minister of College Road Church of Christ in Palatka; the late Bill Wing, Founding Pastor of Dunns Creek Baptist Church; the late Cecil Underwood of Palatka, Florida; the late Rev. Robert “Buddy” Hogarth of Palatka,FL; Jason Sharp, Senior Pastor of Francis Baptist Church; Captain Tobby Williams, Palatka Police Athletic League and of the Palatka Police Dept. Command Staff; the late O.B. Hendrix, former Principal, Husson Avenue Junior High in Palatka, FL; the late William M. “Bill” Thomas (when at the St. Johns River Junior College) of Palatka, FL; Miss Nettie Ruth Brown, retired Home Demonstration Agent for St. Johns County, FL; the late Paul Dinkins, former County Extension Agent for St. Johns County, FL and Ray Deford of Hastings, FL.
To paraphrase Bill Wing, “I am a better person for having known and had these people in my life.”

Dan had elected to forego a local service with a committal service at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
