Morrow, Dennis MORROW -- Father Dennis W. Morrow, age 72, was called home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, May 16, 2020. Father Den was born at the Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital (the former Bishops' House) at 1225 Lake Drive, S.E., on May 3, 1948, the son of C.W. Bud Morrow and Marian Rose Tursky. He was baptized at St. Mary's Church in Grand Rapids on May 30, 1948, and given the middle initial W. (with a period, unlike Harry S Truman!) to impartially honor his two grandfathers, Wallace Morrow and Walter Tursky. He attended Turner and St. Francis Xavier elementary schools, St. Joseph's Seminary, Aquinas College, St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, the North American College in Rome, St. John's Seminary in Plymouth, and Catholic University in Washington, DC. He has always been grateful to his many teachers and professors for their valiant attempts to teach him something. Father Den was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Richard (1951); his dad, Bud (2009); and his mom, Marian (2015). He is survived by his sister, Diane Marie Morrow; his nephew, Mark (Candice) Maksymowski; his niece, Jennifer Gundy; his great-nieces, Aleaha Maksymowski, Amaya Elliott, and Janiya Elliott; his aunt, Charlotte Tursky; and a host of cousins, parishioners, and friends too numerous to name in the obituary without using up the life's savings. Father Den was ordained a priest on August 24, 1975, by Bishop Joseph M. Breitenbeck at St. Andrew's Cathedral. He was delighted to serve the Church, the Body of Christ, in parishes in Muskegon, Grand Rapids, and Ludington; as a pastor at St. Edward's in Lake Odessa (1984-86) and at Our Lady of Sorrows in Grand Rapids (1988-93). He has been pastor of SS. Peter & Paul in Grand Rapids since 1993. His many hats included those of archivist of the Diocese of Grand Rapids since 1976 and a diocesan canon lawyer since 1981. In 1976, he was appointed by the city manager as chaplain of both the Grand Rapids Fire and Police Departments; and was greatly honored to serve his first-responder brothers and sisters, and through them the general public, for over 40 years. Those decades, his years as a mail carrier while in school, and his interest in local history provided him an address-by-address knowledge of much of the city, which he was only too glad to share with others, in both official and unofficial capacities. Father Den will lie in state in his parish church of SS. Peter & Paul from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20. Please enter at the Quarry St entrance following current Covid-19 protocol. A private funeral will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Andrew's Cathedral. Burial will take place in the Priests' Circle at St. Andrew's Cemetery at Madison & Prince S.E., where so many of the Catholic pioneers of Grand Rapids await the resurrection. Every street and block the funeral procession traverses will be one where Father Den delivered mail during his "glory days" of hittin' the bricks for the U.S. Post Office (now the USPS). Memorials to the Archives of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, 360 Division Ave., S. 49503, or memorials or Mass offerings to one's own parish church will be gratefully accepted.
