Biography of Celia Elizabeth "Beth" Fellows Stewart (1888-1977)
By Joan Stewart Smith, one of her many granddaughters

Celia Elizabeth (née Fellows) Stewart was born on 16 May 1888 in Lyons, Walworth County, Wisconsin, the eldest of the 8 children of Fred Winslow Fellows and Lilla May Woolsey. Called Beth, she took great pride in her deep family roots that led back to Colonial America in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and across the Atlantic to England. Always aware of her legacy, she made a point to caption, in her distinctive handwriting, each of the many photographs she snapped or saved.

Beth graduated from Lake Geneva Community High School, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 1906. At 21, she married the soft-spoken Robert Wright Stewart of Hebron, McHenry County, Illinois on 13 Oct 1909 in Lyons. They met at the home of Robert's uncle Charles L. Nichols, where Beth lodged while teaching at the one-room country schoolhouse in Linn, Walworth County, Wisconsin.

Robert descended from the first Stewart homesteaders of Hebron, Illinois and the first Nichols homesteaders of Linn, Wisconsin, near the state border. Robert and Beth raised a family of six children on their 167-acre dairy farm on the Hebron prairie, which was Robert's portion of the land he inherited from his father. Their children were: Robert John (m. Sally C. Brown, Ruby Jannisch), Fred Fellows (m. Margaret K. Johnston, Agnes Bruce), Francese May (m. James E. Whitney), Elsie Jean (m. Maurice R. Woodbury), Charlotte Fellows (m. Arthur W. Eggert) and Bruce Maddox (m. Mary Kay Bergin).

Beloved, artistic, intelligent and hard-working, Beth was active in the little farm community and had many friends. Switching from Methodist to Presbyterian when she married, she taught Sunday School for many years at the Hebron Presbyterian Church.

Upon retirement, Robert and Beth moved a short distance up the hill on Stewart Road to a new little barn-red house with an apple orchard in the back. The property looked down on the Stewart farm and bordered the cow pasture, where black and white Holstein dairy cows peacefully grazed nearby.

Beth passed on her love of nature, reading, art and history to her descendants, nieces and nephews. She spent hours sketching birds, flora and fauna about the farm, opening the eyes of those around her. Many remember the collection of books on her shelves for the little ones and the print of Scottish tartans on the wall, a tribute to her husband's Stewart roots.

Beth survived Robert by 16 years, who passed away 10 Oct 1961, aged 77. During her last years, she lived with her daughter Charlotte Eggert and family in Hebron. After only two weeks, she died on 29 Apr 1977 at the Golden Years nursing home in Walworth, Wisconsin, aged 88. Beth was buried at her husband's side in South Hebron Cemetery, also known as Stewart Cemetery, down the road from the Stewart farm.

Beth's many grandchildren and great grandchildren adored her. When each was born, she added another silver charm to link to her charm bracelet. On one side of the charm was the name, and on the other side was the date of birth. This bracelet would make music as she moved, reminding each of us that we were always with her.
