Born in Glendale, California, his family moved to Okmulgee Oklahoma in 1948. In 1950 his family moved to Lubbock, Texas, where most of his childhood was spent in Lubbock, Texas. Duane graduated high school in Lubbock in 1965, and enrolled in Texas Tech University architecture school in fall of 1965 and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture (professional degree) in 1970. Duane met Laura Tribble in 1967. Married to Laura Tribble in June 1970, they raised two sons, Ben and Chris. His death came suddenly on 4 August 2014 of pulmonary embolism. His remains were cremated and retained by family.
