A 1939 graduate of The Milton Hershey Industrial School which began, in 1909, as a home and school for impoverished, healthy, orphaned boys. The children received a stable home life, a rigorous course of academic learning, and education in agricultural and vocational disciplines. Following his mother's death in 1923, his father remarried, and 3 half-siblings were born. The specifics regarding his enrollment are unknown.

He worked as a reporter for Bradford Era (Mckean County, PA), the Buffalo Courier Express, Palm Beach FL Post Times, and the Pocono Record. He was a reporter, copy editor, Pennsylvania state editor, and night news editor for the Easton Express. His last position was a chief copy editor from 1971 to 1985 at the Morning Call (Allentown).
He served in the Army infantry in WWII, serving in France and Germany. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster.
