Vernon S. Brewer Jr., son of the late Vernon S. Brewer and Margaret Hoopes Brewer, prepared for his journey and waved goodbye on Friday, July 20th, 2018 at the age of 92 to "slip the surly bonds of earth" and "touch the face of God."
He would like you to know that his work here is done. He received a call, a sort of offer you can't refuse, for an appointment from which he will not be returning. This assignment comes with a reunion with the love of his life, the late Anne Twohig Brewer, who he has not seen in a long time. His new mission takes him to a wonderful place where he will be socializing [of course], dancing to Frank Sinatra, taking pictures of everything in sight, and watching his Philadelphia Eagles win a second super bowl from the best seat in the house.
He leaves behind five children, Sharon Dickey and her husband Glenn, Linda Warren and her husband Dennis, Robert Brewer and his wife Karol, Thomas Brewer and his wife Sharon, Tim Brewer and his wife Michele, fifteen grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
A pillar of the West Chester community, Vernon graduated from West Chester High School in 1944 and earned a degree in economics from Franklin and Marshall College in 1948. He served his country admirably, flying the Navy's B17 Flying Fortress during World War II. After returning from the war, he owned and operated Brewer Sheet Metal solidifying its presence in Chester County as one of the most prominent and well-respected HVAC businesses.
Vernon lived his life modeling the words of Winston Churchill, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." A member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester, the Golden Rams Football Club, the Optimus Club, the West Chester Rotary Club, and the West Chester Senior Center, he was a staple in the community. As a member of the Brandywine Acting Guild, he performed at Longwood Gardens and Summer Stock. He also gave his time volunteering at the Chester County Hospital.
He was blessed in life, finding love a second time with the late Dorothy Borell Brewer. He is survived by the children of his blended family, Theresa, Kathleen, Mary-Jane, Dorothy, Paul, Bernadette, and their nine children.
