James Claypoole Sr was a grandson of the pioneer settler in Pennsylvania, Quaker merchant James Claypoole (1634-1687). James Claypoole Sr. was apprenticed to the Swedish-American painter, Gustavus Hesselius. Later, Claypoole set up an artists supplies business in Walnut St, Philadelphia. His son, James Claypoole Jr, became a portrait painter and limner. In 1761, Claypoole Sr. was a founding member of St. Pauls church and in 1777, he was elected/appointed High Sheriff of Philadelphia.
