Thomas served as a private in the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company F (Civil War). He was wounded at Fort Stedman on March 25, 1865. (The grave marker incorrectly records his service as with the 201st Regiment.)

The son of James & Sarah (Brindley) Adams, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Toboyne Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had brown hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, and mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Fort Stedman March 25, 1865, he remained on the active roll and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He married Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" Elder in 1875 and fathered Cramer (b. ?), Viola (b. 1885, d. 06/13/85), Ida J. E., (b. 10/28/87), and May V. (b. 05/13/89). Lizzie died from a broken neck suffered in a sleighing accident, so upon Thomas's death the latter children were sent to a soldiers' orphans home.
