Peter Denius, 87, Bismarck Resident
A well-known former Center businessman, Peter Denius, 87, died in a Bismarck nursing home Tuesday after a long illness.
Born in Russia Jun 28, 1882, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Denius. He came to the United States in 1906 and settled in Yucca. He married Celestine Gess at St. Vincent, Sept 7, 1909.
The couple moved to Center in 1916 where Mr. Denius opened a shoe repair shop. In 1923 he started the Center Freight Line which ran between Center and Bismarck, and in 1928 he opened the Denius Garage.
For five years he was employed at North Pole Resort, Colorado Springs, Colo., where he acted as Santa Claus for six months each year. He entered St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Bismarck in 1958.
Mr. Denius was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Center, and he had served as a member of the town board for six years.
He leaves two sons, Carl, Center, and John, Gillette, Wyo., and two daughters, Mrs. Leo Yantzer, Center, and Mrs. Donald Kocourek, 504 Eighth St. N.W. Mandan. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT, Friday, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Center, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William Moelter officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin’s Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Robert Schwede, Thomas Rambur, James Berg, Douglas Kocourek, and James and Jerome Yantzer.
The Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Buehler Funeral Chapel, Center, and the body may be viewed at the Buehler Funeral Home in Mandan from 2pm Wednesday until Thursday morning.
