Ruth Appleton Bell, MD, age 96, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 11, 2020.

Ruth was born June 15, 1923 in Providence, RI to the late Paul Appleton, MD and Frances Ricker Appleton, RN.

Her husband, D. William J. Bell, MD, parents and brother, Daniel Day Appleton preceded her in death.

She was a pediatrician in Providence Rhode Island and North Conway New Hampshire for many years. She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan during World War II as one of only four women out of a class of 160 residents. Her class was accelerated into a three year residency because of the wartime shortage of stateside doctors. She was an intrepid world traveler; her travels took her to all corners of the Earth, including an expedition to Antarctica when she was in her 80s. Her final trip was a walking tour of Scandinavia at 88 years of age. She was also a member of the Episcopal Church, and she loved animals, especially her cherished dogs. She was devoted to the University of Michigan Medical School for the rest of her life. She also attended the annul American Pediatrics conventions into her 90s. She will be remembered by her countless patients and those who loved her. She retired to Great Falls Montana and moved to Williamsburg Virginia a few years ago. In 2019, she settled in Brandenburg Kentucky.
