NEW ROADS -- Former City Police Chief Joseph Kirby Aguillard died Wednesday at his home here. He was 73.

Aguillard, who joined the Police Department in 1945, served as chief from 1967 to 1974. After his retirement, he served one four-year term on the City Council.

"He was a good man," said Police Chief Kirby Jarreau, who worked as an auxiliary officer under Aguillard. "He never met a stranger. He always helped people."

Niland Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Martha Gebhart Aguillard of New Roads, and a son, James Aguillard of Orswell, Ga.

Visitation will be at Niland from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, with a Mass scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church here. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Died 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1991, at his residence in New Roads. He was 73 and a native of Pointe Coupee Parish. He was retired New Roads chief of police with 36 years of service. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, New Roads, at 10 a.m Friday. Burial in church cemetery. Survived by wife, Martha Aguillard, New Roads; a son, James K. Aguillard, Orswell, Ga.; a sister, Inez Bergeron, Baton Rouge; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; and a sister, Ida Mae Okley. He was a past town councilman and usher at St. Mary Catholic Church, New Roads. Niland Funeral Home, New Roads, in charge of arrangements.
