Matthew Burgher was the Warden of the Utah State Penitentiary in Draper, Utah. He died in the line of duty at age 35. He was attacked by a group of prisoners attempting to escape the prison. Warden Burgher was beat repeately with a rock tucked inside a woolen sock. The suspects escaped, but were captured and returned to the prison. Three months later, they escaped again, and were never recaptured. During their second and final escape, they killed a fellow prisoner, that prisoner was serving a Life sentence for killing a Provo Police Officer, Albert H. Bowen, in October of 1873.
