John Breckenridge Phelps was born on April 25, 1852 according to his birth record, in Fayette, Kentucky, however, his death record shows his birth April 13, 1852, his father, William Chenault Phelps, was 32 and his mother, the former Sarah Ann Hunter, was 18. He married Sarah Susan Olive "Susie" Martin on March 3, 1879, in Hustonville, Lincoln County, Kentucky. They had six children in 16 years. He died on May 20, 1933, in Lexington, Kentucky, at the age of 81, and was buried there.
