Merle Henry Settle lived his entire life in Quincy IL. He was born to a large Catholic family and remained Catholic for his lifetime.

Merle met a beautiful red haired young lady named "Sally" at work and they soon wed. For a while they ran a restaurant named Jax, and then Merle worked as a home Tv repairman.

Merle loved a nice pipe of tobacco when he was younger and the grandchildren, who asked what he'd like, would always be told to give him a package of Borkum Riff or Skoal tobacco for Christmas. After he retired, Merle and wife Sally (Leona Lange Settle) enjoyed the company of family and lived quietly in the home they had raised their two sons in.

Their house was loved by the grandchildren, who were spoiled with lavish holiday dinners for every occasion. The grandchildren and step-grandchildren got the same toys. Merle had a 'contagious,' hearty laugh and told energetic, entertaining stories. Like his brothers, who were in the restaurant business, Merle had an outgoing personality.

Merle was preceded in death by some of his brothers, and by eldest son Ronald "Ronnie" Settle.
