Dorthy Sparks of Portales, NM died August 24, 2007, at her home in Portales. A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 28th, 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Portales. The Revs Don Holladay and Jeff Symonds will officiate. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery.
Mrs. Sparks was born in the Rock Lake Community near Melrose in Curry County, New Mexico, November 19, 1919. Her parents were Edward Livingston Carter and Nina Mae Payne Carter. After moving to Roosevelt County as a baby, she was a lifetime resident. She attended ENMU for two years, 1938 thru 1939. She married E. F. Outhouse on August 17, 1950, in Portales. She was first and foremost a mother and one of New Mexico's first Diaconal Ministers and a Christian Educator.
Dorthy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Portales where she was in the Esther Circle, was a Parish Visitor and headed the Memorial Committee. She served on the New Mexico Council on Aging and helped to develop the Senior Citizens Center and Meals On Wheels in Portales. Dorthy was a talented artist, enjoying painting and sketching. She loved to cook, sew and take care of people. She taught others how to make school clothes out of old clothing.
Survivors include six daughters: Sandra and Roger Marshall of Santa Fe, NM, Kaye Dunlap and Marcia Brinton of Rogers, AR, Debbe and Mark Stanley of Albuquerque, NM, Rhonda and Dan Ferguson of Odessa, TX, DeAnne and Danny Whisenhunt of Loveland, CO and Tami and Rob Seifert of Orlando, FL.; Two sisters: Faye and Neil Pruit of Melrose, NM and Lola Mae Coffey also of Melrose; One brother: Don Carter of Roswell, NM; 11 grandchildren: Karen Gaye Collazo, Nina and Steve Pedroni; Roger and Leslie Marshall, Jr., Clinton Rafe and Kimberly Essary, Jennifer Essary and Rodrigo Manriquez, Mindy Shay and Larry Davis, Jason Stanley, Jeremy and Brandy Ferguson, Skye Ferguson, Cassandra Seifert and Jacob Seifert; 18 great grandchildren: Carmen and Rob Breckenridge, Alexi Hernandez, Isabella Bronstein, Dusty Justus, Mara Justus, Kara Espinosa, Kimbra Espinosa, Bo Essary, Ty Marshall, Dillon Marshall, Auston Price, Mateo Manriquez, Milan Manriquez, Aman Rawlings, Sun Rawlings, Merrick Davis, Serenity Ferguson and Emma Ferguson; and one great great grandchild: Aleta Breckenridge.
She was preceded by her parents, husband E. F. Outhouse, beloved Carter cousins and brother-in-law, LeRoy Coffey.
