Published in Daily Press from Sep. 2 to Sep. 5, 2016. Lila Mae Carter June 10, 1930 - August 11, 2016 ----Lila Mae Carter of Wrightwood passed away peacefully on August 11, 2016. She was born Lila Mae Shore to Thomas Nathan and Isabel Blanche Shore on June 10, 1930 in Long Beach, CA. Lila attended schools and City College in Long Beach where she met and later married Lavale Thomas Carter on January 20, 1951. They had four sons: Thomas (Karen) of Columbia Falls, MT; Stanley (Debbie) of Challis, ID; Kenneth (Sherry) of Phippsburg, CO; and Randall (Debra) of Elko, NV. Lila was preceded in death by her parents, son Stanley and grandson Charles Buster Carter. She is survived by her husband; sons Thomas, Kenneth and Randall; brother Nathan (Margie) Shore of La Quinta, CA; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Lila was passionate about art and a renowned Western artist with paintings in private collections throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Panama and England. She received a special invitation in 1976 from Anne Armstrong, United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, to hang a painting in the U.S. Embassy in London. It was a Bicentennial painting titled "The Great Territorial Race of 1893". Lila established the first local artists gallery in Wrightwood, CA. She was a charter member of the San Bernardino Museum of Fine Art and a member of the National League of American Pen Women, Inc. Lila loved music. She sang and played piano. She was the founder and first president of the Sweet Adelines, Wrightwood chapter. Lila was very active in her church and sang in the choir. Lila was devoted to her family and loved gatherings with her sons and their families.She also loved to travel and did so extensively, often painting on location. There will be a memorial for Lila on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Wrightwood, 1543 Barbara St., Wrightwood, CA 92397. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Lila's name to your local Muscular Dystrophy Association chapter or the American Cancer Society.
