SAMUEL OSCAR MAYFIELD

December 12, 1931 - July 16, 2012


Mr. Samuel Oscar Mayfield passed away Monday, July 16, 2012, at Palestine Regional Hospital.


Mr. Mayfield was born December 12, 1931, in Medina, Texas, to Brice S. and Annie Mae Mayfield.


He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, with a B.S. in mathematics and then worked for NASA in Houston for eighteen years. He supported all of the Apollo flights (including Apollo 11, the moon landing, and Apollo 13) as well as several Skylab and Shuttle missions. After retiring from NASA, he worked on the International Space Station at Rockwell International / United Space Alliance before he retired to Grapeland.


He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Married to Dixie Stine Mayfield for 57 years, and the father of three sons and one daughter, he coached Little League Baseball for over 15 years, and supported his children's school activities.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Grapeland, where he served as a deacon until health problems required him to become inactive.


He is survived by his wife, Dixie Mayfield; son Robert Mayfield and wife Brenda of Wichita Falls; daughter Karen and husband Tom Hudson of Grapeland; son Ronald and wife Lauralynn of Pearland; son Steven and wife Stacey of Denton; grandson Jason Mayfield and wife Laura of Wichita Falls; granddaughter Dr. Teri Mayfield of Jacksonville,FL.; granddaughter Carrie and husband Matt Kelley of Wichita Falls; granddaughter Melissa Hudson of Houston; grandsons Samuel and Sean and granddaughter Janelle Mayfield of Pearland; granddaughter Megan and grandsons, Andrew and Aaron Mayfield of Denton; great granddaughters Ashby and Tobey Mayfield of Wichita Falls; and great-grandson Tucker Kelley of Wichita Falls; sister Mary Jo and husband H.L. Porter of Arlington and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Doris Evans Beech, and brother's Brice and Carl.


Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church, Grapeland,at 10:00

AM Thursday, July 19, 2012, with Pastor Todd Nivens officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund, First Baptist Church, Grapeland.
